This assumes you’ve already started the claim process and know the basics of how claiming works — see Claim ownership of an app. Below are the most common issues developers run into, why they happen, and what to do about each one.
Why isn’t my organization offered for claiming automatically?
What you might see:
- You registered with your current or company email, but your organization isn’t offered for claiming automatically.
Why this happens:
- Automatic claiming only triggers on an exact match with the email address stored for that organization in the Softonic catalog.
- A different address — even on the same company domain — doesn’t trigger it.
What to do:
- Start the claim flow for the app.
- Accept the distribution rights.
- Select “I don’t have access to this email”.
- Upload 1 to 3 supporting documents proving ownership (see below).
Why can’t I claim another organization if I already have one?
What you might see:
- The Claim button is greyed out, or a message says you can only claim one organization with your account.
- The “Claim App” button opens a “Claim Organization” pop-up instead.
- You can’t add apps listed under a different organization name, an older developer alias, or an old author page — even though the apps are yours.
Why this happens:
- Each account can claim or create one organization. Once you have one, you can’t self-claim a second organization from the catalog.
- This applies even when the email or website matches but the organization name differs.
- This is expected: each account can manage one organization.
What to do:
Email devsupport@softonic.com with:
- the list of Softonic listing URLs you want moved into your existing organization
- proof of ownership for those apps (see “Why was my ownership proof rejected or marked insufficient?” below for accepted documents)
Our support team reviews the proof and moves the apps into your organization. The same route covers consolidating apps spread across several old organizations, and transferring ownership to a different person or email within the same company.
Why doesn’t my app appear in the claim search, or in my dashboard after my claim was approved?
What you might see:
- Sometimes a specific platform version of your app (for example, the Mac version) doesn’t appear.
- Your claim was approved, but the app isn’t in your dashboard.
- After claiming your organization, only some of your apps appear, not your full catalog.
- Claim notifications or banners disappear, and you’re unsure whether your apps are linked to your organization.
Why this happens:
- Some listings aren’t visible or claimable — for example, hidden listings or listings that aren’t online.
- After approval, apps must be linked to your organization. This isn’t always instant.
- If you haven’t accepted distribution rights for an app, it can stay in a pending or missing-declaration state (see “What do I need to do after claiming?” below).
What to do:
- Check that you’re logged in with the account and organization you used for the claim.
- Accept distribution rights for any app showing as pending or missing declaration.
- If the app still doesn’t appear, contact devsupport@softonic.com with your account email, your organization name, the Softonic listing URL(s) of the missing app(s) — including the platform (Windows, Mac, Android, etc.) — and a screenshot of your dashboard. Our support team will check the listing and link it to your organization.
Why was my ownership proof rejected or marked insufficient?
Claims submitted with documents are reviewed by our support team. The most common reasons for rejection:
- The documents don’t clearly reference the claimed app or its developer.
- The documents come from a different platform than the app — for example, evidence from another store is submitted for an Android app. Android apps need Google Signature validation: the app doesn’t have to be currently listed on Google Play, but the signature must check out.
- The claim comes from a generic email address (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo) with no verifiable link to the developer or organization.
- The developer account on the relevant store has been suspended or terminated. Claims can only be approved when the claimant holds an active, valid developer account on that platform.
- You’re resubmitting without fixing the issue from the previous rejection.
- The documents appear edited, incomplete, or aren’t the expected type.
Accepted documents (1 to 3 files):
- An official document proving the company’s legal existence and registration
- An official letter on company letterhead, signed by an authorized representative
- A screenshot from the App Store or Google Play Console showing the app name and developer account
- Store invoices or payment receipts
- A license or distribution agreement
- A trademark certificate
- A domain registration or WHOIS record
- A signed and dated sworn statement of ownership
What to do:
- Use a corporate email where possible.
- Submit documents that name the specific app and come from the same platform as the app.
- If you’re claiming with a different email than the one in your store console, include a document that explains the connection (e.g. a signed company letter).
- Briefly explain your relationship to the app in your claim — owner, employee, authorized representative — and make sure it matches your documents.
- If rejected, fix the specific issue before submitting a new claim.
Why does the claim flow group my app with others, or show a duplicate listing?
What you might see:
- The claim flow groups your app with apps from other publishers and asks you to claim the whole group.
- Your app appears twice — for example, an old outdated page plus a current one — or an old listing has wrong information you can’t edit.
- You want an outdated or discontinued listing removed.
Occasionally, listings in the catalog are duplicated or grouped incorrectly.
What to do:
- Only claim the apps that belong to you — our support team will separate the rest.
- Contact devsupport@softonic.com with the listing URLs involved: which listing to keep, which listing is a duplicate or outdated, and which apps don’t belong to you.
- Our support team can separate wrongly grouped apps and unpublish or hide duplicate listings. Ownership proof may be requested.
Listings can be unpublished or hidden, but they can’t be permanently deleted from the catalog.
What do I need to do after claiming?
Accept distribution rights for each app
After claiming — especially after apps are added or moved into your organization by our support team — you need to accept the distribution rights for every app.
Apps without accepted distribution rights show as pending or missing declaration and can’t be managed normally.
Go through each app in your dashboard and accept the distribution rights. If you have a large catalog, loading all your apps can take a moment.
Use the correct signed APK for Android updates
New versions must pass a signature check. For Android, the APK signature must match your app’s Google Play distribution key (the app signing key), not the local upload key. Debug or test-signed APKs are rejected.
Uploading the APK built locally with the upload key is a common cause of a signature mismatch error.
How to get the correct file:
- Open Google Play Console.
- Go to App Bundle Explorer.
- Choose the relevant version.
- Download the signed APK.
- Upload that file to Softonic Publishing Center.
See Softonic publishing requirements: quality, compliance, and troubleshooting for the full signature-mismatch fix.
If you’ve uploaded the signed APK from Play Console and still get a signature error, contact devsupport@softonic.com with your app name and the error message.
